Zo’diac.

An imaginary belt or zone in the heavens, extending about eight degrees each side of the ecliptic.

Signs of the Zodiac. The zodiac is divided into twelve equal parts, proceeding from west to east; each part is thirty degrees, and is distinguished by a sign. Beginning with “Aries,” we have first six northern and then six southern signs—i.e. six on the north side and six on the south side of the equator; beginning with “Capricornus,” we have six ascending and then six descending signs—i.e. six which ascend higher and higher towards the north, and six which descend lower and lower towards the south. The six northern signs are: Aries (the ram), Taurus (the bull), Gemini (the twins), spring signs; Cancer (the crab), Leo (the lion), Virgo (the virgin), summer signs. The six southern are: Libra (the balance), Scorpio (the scorpion), Sagitta’rius (the archer), autumn signs; Capricornus (the goat), Aqua’rius (the water-bearer) and Pisces (the fishes), winter signs. (Greek, zo-on, living creatures.)

Our vernal signs the RAM begins,
Then comes the BULL, in May the TWINS;-
The CRAB in June, next LEO shines,
And VIRGO ends the northern signs.
The BALANCE brings autumnal fruits,
The SCORPION stings, the ARCHER shoots;—
December’s GOAT brings wintry blast,
AQUARIUS rain, the FISH come last.

—E. Cobham Brewer, Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. 1898

Earthlore Astrology - Zodiac Body CorrespondencesGlossary Study References
Here you may learn the language of the stars, including an arcanum of terms for which medieval Astrologers risked fire at the stake.

A compendium of all you may ever wish to know about the study of Astrology and the task of Casting a Horoscope.

Glossary Excerpt

Part of Fortune, pars fortuna:

A point in the chart usually taken as an indication of the fundamental focus of self-interest in the life. The distance measured counterclockwise from the sun to the moon is projected counterclockwise from the ascendant and the degree is known as the Part of Fortune.

AstrologyEarthlore Astrology - The Planet MercuryWere You Born on a Cusp?

An Earthlore Foundation Stone of Learning

Those of us born close to the end of one sign and approaching another, say within 2 degrees of the beginning degree of the next sign, are referred to as being born on 'The Cusp'. The cusp, of course, is the point at 0 degrees of the new sign.

There are differing opinions among Astrologers as to just what being born on a Cusp means. Some suggest that where a sign ends and another begins there is a hard line of demarcation. One type suddenly ends and another type suddenly begins. Absolutely untrue! Rather, there is a fading out of the influence of the current and a gradual increase in traits related to the following sign.

Earthlore Astrology - Sagittarius SymbolContemporary Studies

The aim of the Earthlore features is to provide an objective resource which supports individual research into the varied schools of World Astrology. To enhance these resources we have initiated a Contemporary Study of the primary aspects and components of Astrology. The initial studies focus upon each of the twelve Sun Signs. Each study consists of a broad range of questions on the character and behavior of the particular sign. The entire series of questions is presented within a secure, private survey.

A segment of these surveys shall be open to the viewers of Earthlore who register to participate. Among other subjects, we will be examining the accepted profiles of each sign which have accumulated through time. Participants will have the opportunity to voice their own views and share experiences which may or may not agree with established norms. The intent is not to challenge aged views, but to add a broad contemporary element to existing lore. Each succeeding year new audiences will be given the chance to add their own perceptions, so that fresh perspectives will continue to evolve our understanding of this ancient science.

We invite and welcome your participation!
